1. Keep Them Challenged
Most top employees excel because they're smart, active and curious—they can easily become bored and are always looking for something new and interesting to do. Provide them with a constant stream of interesting assignments and projects. And one great way to do this while also benefiting the company? Present them with some of your company's biggest challenges, like how to cut costs in your shipping operation while making it greener or how to best promote your products via social media.
2. Give Them Visibility
Everyone wants to be recognized for their accomplishments and successes, or for their strengths. Your best employees are no different, so provide them with visibility by asking them to give presentations to your board, lead high-profile teams or participate in offsite meetings, especially with (other) management. Encourage them to make connections with other high performers in your organization, perhaps by teaming them up on important projects together. Then invite them to present the results to your executive team.
3. Reward Them for Rising to the Occasion
After you've given your high performers challenges and visibility, such as by putting them in charge of a new customer initiative, assigning them to leadership roles in cross-functional teams, or having them start a new venture in an entirely new area of business for your company—reward them for their hard work.
4. Make Sure They Have Mentors
Your company will benefit from having top employees who are engaged in your organization and in their work—and a great way to help this happen is by making sure they have mentors who can help provide advice, career guidance and connections to others in their network. Find senior employees who have a real knack for engaging with younger people and can give them the advice and support they need.
5. Show Them the Way to Growth and Advancement
To retain your top employees, you have to make sure they know that they will have clear-cut opportunities for advancement. If they don't see a future with your organization, or if it looks like they'll have to wait a long time to advance, they'll start to look for opportunities elsewhere. Make sure you set aside time to meet with them and chart out a career plan, with clear milestones, training and assessments along the way.
